What is a Content Producer and why do you need one?

If you’re putting on an event and plan to include speeches, presentations, music or videos, chances are you’ll need a Content Producer to help bring together the content required for the event.

But what does a Content Producer actually do? How do you source a Content Producer? Read on to find out more…

What is a Content Producer?

A Content Producer is like a creative storyteller who brings an event to life. They’re responsible for creating and developing the content that will be presented during an event. This could include scripts for speeches, videos, presentations, graphics, music and other forms of media.

While a Producer is responsible for pulling the event together and overseeing the whole event once it goes live, the Content Producer (as the name suggests) focuses on the content.

Their goal is to make sure the content is engaging, informative and entertaining, while capturing the attention of the event attendees.

What does a Content Producer do?

The Content Producer works closely with the client to understand their goals, theme and target audience for the event. Then they’ll brainstorm ideas and develop a content strategy that aligns with the event’s objectives.

Once the direction is set, the Content Producer begins creating the actual content. Although some Content Producers can and do write or design parts of it, they won’t necessarily do the work themselves. Instead, they tend to manage the process and find other freelancers to design, create, edit and write the content required, while they coordinate timelines, manage version control and ensure everything is on track.

A Content Producer might run a film crew to shoot a video, then oversee the edit to ensure the right message is conveyed. They might storyboard the presentation, helping tie the story together for the presentation delivery. Or perhaps they’ll write or help to write copy that introduces a particular part of the event. Then, on the day of the event, the Content Producer oversees the execution of the content.

Why do you need a Content Producer for your event?

A Content Producer plays a crucial role in ensuring your event content is aligned with your brand identity, to maintain consistency in messaging, tone and visual representation. They help create content that reflects your organisation’s values, promotes its products or services, and reinforces its brand image.

Hiring a Content Producer for your event means they can take care of all the content, giving you peace of mind that it’ll all be completed to the highest standard, allowing you to focus on other things.

What makes a good Content Producer?

The role of Content Producer isn’t for the faint-hearted. It takes skill and organisation to keep up with many edits and ensure version control is correctly followed.

Most Content Producers will have come to the role from other positions, having previously worked as a Producer or Showcaller, or even having performed one of the creative roles to gain the necessary skills needed to be a Content Producer.

Organisation is key, especially for big, complex events with numerous speakers and types of content. A love of spreadsheets is, without doubt, essential to keep everything on track and up to date.
