I’ve done a complete 360!

For the past 8 months, I’ve had a bit (read that as “a lot”) of a love-hate relationship with my house.

The thought of selling up and moving onto pastures new was exciting. Releasing its equity would give me and my son a new lease of life and money to invest in new plans.

But the reality has been anything but exciting.

Between its location, my neighbours, estate agents, and potential buyers either turning out to be tyre kickers or tighter than a submarine door, it’s been a drain on my energy that I didn’t need.

I’ve also realised that housing prices are so ridiculous right now that the money I would’ve had left from selling the house would have given me just enough to buy a ramshackled potting shed in the middle of nowhere.

It’s all felt impossibly impossible.

So, I’ve gone from deciding to sell my family home and downsizing, to taking my house off the market and looking to take in lodgers!

Here’s the thought process behind it.

I get some extra cash, so the exciting new chapter can still be realised, and I keep the house. Did you know that the government allows you to earn up to £7,500 tax-free as long as you’re renting a furnished room in your main residence?

Win/Win, right?

I’m sure there are horror stories, but for fear of not being able to sleep at night, I won’t be giving them too much headspace!

Instead, I’m choosing to focus on the great stories I’ve heard from friends and colleagues about being lodgers themselves or renting out rooms in their own homes. Some of them have done this for years, and it’s how they’ve been able to afford to live where they live.

So, I have my POSITIVE big girl pants on and I’m looking forward to this great new chapter.
