Freelance Event Floor Manager

A Floor Manager is the eyes and ears of the production team on the event floor. They’re the person who ensures communication flows between backstage, front-of-house and the technical desk.

They keep presenters, crew and audience in sync, making sure everyone knows where to be and when.

Very similar in some respects to the role of a Stage Manager, but usually found within television or virtual event environments.

The two roles are interchangeable in the respect that many people happily adapt to either role depending on the environment they are working in.

If a Stage Manager was also involved in the event, the Floor Manager would be more focused on everything to do with the audience. 

What They Do

The Floor Manager is often positioned in the auditorium or studio floor, relaying cues from the Showcaller to presenters, audience or crew who aren’t on comms.

They might be giving countdowns to a presenter, signalling when cameras are live, or ushering speakers to stage. They’re also the ones troubleshooting in the room – managing late arrivals, handling audience questions, or quietly fixing problems, like last minute mic changes, without disrupting the show.

And if the presenter starts to get a bit parched, the experienced Floor Manager will notice and have water on standby should it be necessary.
