When people search for “stage management companies” they’re usually solving a specific problem: they need someone to run the stage at their event, and they’re trying to find who provides that.
The answer, most of the time, is a freelance stage manager – not a company at all.
What a stage management company actually is
A stage management company is a business that provides stage management services – typically to theatre, large-scale touring productions, or major live events with complex technical and logistical requirements. They bring project management infrastructure, multiple staff members, and often a full production management framework.
That’s exactly what you need for a large theatre production or a stadium show. For most corporate events, it’s significantly more than you need.
What you probably need instead
A freelance stage manager is one experienced professional who manages your backstage operation on the day. They handle props, set changes, technical resets between sessions, and coordination with the rest of the production crew. They work under the showcaller and alongside the floor manager to keep the show moving.
For the vast majority of corporate events – conferences, awards nights, product launches, hybrid shows – a skilled freelance stage manager is the right solution. You get the experience and the expertise without paying for company overhead, account management, and infrastructure you’ll never use.
How to tell which one you actually need
If your event is a one or two-day corporate production with a standard show crew, a freelance stage manager will cover it. If you’re running a multi-week theatrical production, a large-scale touring show, or something that genuinely requires a team of stage managers working in rotation, a stage management company might make more sense.
When in doubt, talk to someone who knows both options. We work with experienced freelance stage managers regularly – people who’ve worked across corporate events, broadcast, and live performance. We can tell you quickly whether what you’re describing needs a freelancer or something more.
